What Is a Contract SDR Agency? How It Works and When to Hire One
The short answer
A contract SDR agency is an outside team that does the job of a sales development rep for you. It builds your prospect list, cold calls and emails your buyers, and books qualified meetings onto your sales team's calendar. It makes the most sense when you need pipeline in weeks, not months, and don't have an outbound team to manage.
The hardest part of my job isn't the cold calling.
It's explaining what I do.
People ask me all the time, and I usually try something like:
"I'm in sales... but I don't do the selling, I just book meetings for people who then sell the product... I cold call for people... but it's not like selling extended warranties."
Doesn't work.
So here's the plain version.
What does a contract SDR agency actually do?
An SDR, or sales development rep, works the very top of the sales process. Find the right buyers, start conversations, hand qualified meetings to whoever closes deals.
A contract SDR agency does that job for you, from the outside. A full program covers six things:
- Buyer definition. Which companies, which titles and what makes a meeting worth taking.
- List building. Verified contacts from tools like Apollo.io and LinkedIn Sales Navigator.
- Scripts and messaging. Openers, email copy and objection handling written for your market.
- Outreach. Daily calling, plus email and LinkedIn.
- Booking. Meetings dropped straight onto your calendar with notes from the call.
- Reporting. Dials, conversations, meetings and what buyers are saying, every week.
How is it different from a lead list vendor or a marketing agency?
A lead list vendor sells you names and numbers. Calling them is still your problem.
A marketing agency drives inbound interest with ads and content.
A contract SDR agency sits in between. It takes the list, works it by phone and email and gives you real conversations with real buyers.
When does hiring one make sense?
- The founder or your best seller is still doing all the prospecting and is out of hours.
- You need pipeline this quarter and can't wait months for a new hire to ramp.
- You want to test a new market before committing headcount.
- Your SDR just left, or a job posting has been open for weeks.
- You sell a B2B product where one good meeting is worth a LOT.
When is it the wrong fit?
If your deals are tiny, your buyers can't be reached by phone or email, or nobody on your side can run the meetings, outsourcing struggles.
Simply adding more meetings doesn't fix a pipeline problem if nobody closes them. An agency fills the calendar. Your team still has to sell.
What should you ask before you sign?
- How do you define a qualified meeting, and is it written down?
- Who will actually make the calls, and how long have they been cold calling?
- How long until calls go live?
- Can I hear call recordings and see the scripts?
- What does a weekly report look like?
- Which industries and titles have you booked meetings with before?
Good agencies answer these fast and specifically. Vague answers about "multi-channel engagement" with no numbers? Red flag.
How I run it
Cold calling leads. Email and LinkedIn run alongside it.
We define the buyer, build and verify the list, write and test scripts, and launch in two weeks. Every week I review call transcripts to see which segments and messages actually book, then shift effort toward them.
That approach has booked 2,000+ meetings and generated $10M+ in pipeline so far. You can see a few examples on the results page.
How do you explain what you do to people outside sales? Has anyone figured it out?

Frequently asked questions
Is a contract SDR agency the same as appointment setting?
Mostly, yes. Appointment setting describes the outcome, booked meetings. A contract SDR agency usually also handles list building, scripting, multi-channel outreach and reporting.
How long does it take a contract SDR agency to start?
It depends on the agency. SDR Mastery launches programs in two weeks, covering buyer definition, list building and script writing before calls go live.
Do contract SDRs replace my sales team?
No. They handle prospecting. Your account executives or founder still run the meetings and close the deals.
