Cold Calling vs Cold Email for SaaS: Which Books More Meetings?

The short answer

For B2B SaaS, cold calling books more meetings than cold email. Across 2,000+ booked meetings, the phone has always been the top channel. Cold email has gotten less effective as AI automation floods inboxes with look-alike sequences, so it works best as a follow-up: send an email when a prospect asks for one on a call, not as the main way to start conversations.

Cold call or cold email?

Founders ask me this all the time, especially SaaS founders who've been told "nobody picks up the phone anymore."

My answer hasn't changed in 2,000+ booked meetings.

Cold calling. Every time.

Which channel books more meetings for SaaS?

For me, it's always been cold calling. Not most of the time. Always.

A real conversation does things an email can't. You hear the hesitation. You ask a follow-up question. You find out what's actually broken and talk about that instead of a pitch they skimmed in two seconds.

The math works too. It takes me about 100 dials to book a meeting, and roughly 10% of real conversations turn into one. (Full breakdown in what 2,000+ booked meetings taught me.)

Is cold email dead?

Not dead. But it's not what it used to be.

In the age of AI automation, every inbox is flooded with sequences that all sound the same. "I noticed you're hiring..." "Quick question about your Q4 goals..." Buyers have learned to ignore them on sight.

When anyone can send a thousand "personalized" emails in an afternoon, email stops standing out. A human voice on the phone still does.

That's why I don't focus on cold email.

So where does email fit?

I only send emails when a prospect asks for one.

That happens a LOT on cold calls. "Just send me an email" is one of the most common things you'll hear.

And that's fine. Now the email isn't cold. They know who you are, they heard your voice and they told you to send it. That email actually gets read.

The trick is making it useful. Before you hang up, ask one question so you know what to send: "Happy to. So I send something relevant, which is the bigger headache right now, X or Y?" (More on handling brush-offs in how to write a cold call opener.)

The phone also teaches you what to say

This is the part people miss.

One SaaS client and I met after a week of outbound. Only a couple of meetings booked. Not terrible, not great.

So we ran another demo of their product together, this time with me watching like a buyer would.

I found a huge value point we weren't leading with.

We changed the pitch to open with it. From that one change, we booked 2 more demos per week.

You don't find that in email open rates. You find it by talking to buyers, hearing where they lean in, and going back to the product to understand why.

Anyone still getting meetings from cold email in 2026? Genuinely curious what's working for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold calling or cold email better for B2B SaaS?

In Daniel Goerner’s experience across 2,000+ booked meetings, cold calling books more meetings for B2B SaaS than cold email. Email works best as a follow-up when a prospect asks for one on a call.

Is cold email still effective in 2026?

It’s less effective than it used to be. AI automation has flooded inboxes with similar-sounding sequences, so buyers ignore most cold email. A requested follow-up email after a call performs much better.

Should SaaS companies use email and calls together?

Yes, with the phone leading. Use calls to start conversations and send email when the prospect asks, with information tied to what they said on the call.
