What to Expect in Your First 90 Days of Outbound

The short answer

First meetings almost always land by the second week of calling. Month one is a pilot to lock down the ideal customer and a script that books qualified meetings. Month two adds high-intent buying signals like new hires, funding and technology used. By day 90, a well-run program is booking 8 to 12 meetings a month and you know which ones have potential to close.

"How long until this works?"

It's the first question every founder asks me.

Honest answer: it depends on one thing. Do you already have a playbook?

Here's what the first 90 days look like either way.

Path 1: Your ICP isn't dialed in yet

A lot of companies start here. The product is good, people want it, but nobody's nailed down exactly who buys it or what gets them on a call.

Month 1: The pilot

The point of the pilot isn't to book meetings.

It's to figure out what works consistently.

We build a script, test it on real buyers, meet to review the results and figure out which titles, industries and company sizes book qualified meetings.

That said... first meetings almost always land by the second week of calling. It's very uncommon for it to take longer, but every campaign is different.

Month 2: Adding buying signals

After 30 days we've got a script that works and the ICP locked down.

Now we sharpen the list with high-intent signals:

Calling companies with a reason to buy right now makes every conversation more relevant.

Month 3: Seeing the results

By day 90 we're seeing the fruit of the work.

Anywhere from 8 to 12 meetings a month, and we know which ones have real potential to close.

Path 2: You already have a playbook

Some companies come to me with everything in place. A proven ICP, scripts that work, lists that are built or easy to build.

They just want a rep who executes the playbook well.

These companies always get the best results early. That's to be expected. There's very little testing to do, so the calls start producing almost right away.

A lot of them have a small TAM. They can't afford a rep who blows through the list and burns leads. That's why they hire an expert instead of a new rep who's learning on their buyers.

I've worked with a few companies at this stage. They often have me work their playbook for three to six months, get everything documented, then bring on an internal team that starts with a proven process. (More on outsourced vs in-house SDRs here.)
